Australian Shepherd Enrichment Ideas
Enrichment ideas for Australian Shepherds: food puzzles, scent games, training games, indoor and outdoor activities, and toy rotation.
By The Aussie Standard · Updated August 2026

Enrichment is the part of the day that gives an Australian Shepherd a job. Without one, most Aussies invent something — usually involving the fence line, the vacuum, or your ankles.
None of the ideas below require special equipment to start.
Why mental stimulation matters
Herding dogs were bred to make decisions all day. Twenty minutes of problem-solving often does more for household calm than an extra mile of walking.
Food puzzles
- Serve part of a meal from a puzzle rather than a bowl.
- Scatter kibble in a snuffle mat or across grass.
- Freeze a refillable toy for a longer session.
Scent games
- Hide treats in a room and send the dog to find them.
- Three-box search: one baited container among several.
- Trail a treat path through the yard and let the nose work.
Training games
Short trick sessions, place work, shaping games and impulse-control practice all count as enrichment. Five focused minutes is a real session.
Outdoor activities
- Structured fetch with pauses and cues
- Recall practice on a long line
- Sniff walks with no pace requirement
- Simple backyard obstacle work
Indoor activities
- Stair recalls and hallway retrieves
- Cardboard box unpacking, supervised
- Name-the-toy games
- Settle practice on a mat with a chew
Toy rotation
Keep most toys out of sight and rotate weekly. Novelty is free enrichment.
Preventing boredom before it starts
Anchor enrichment to the times of day when trouble usually shows up — early morning, late afternoon, and the stretch before dinner.
