Gear
The Aussie Gear Guide
An evergreen Australian Shepherd gear guide covering harnesses, leashes, collars, crates, beds, grooming tools, enrichment, travel, cleaning and outdoor equipment.
By The Aussie Standard · Updated August 2026

Gear for an Australian Shepherd gets tested harder than gear for the average dog: more miles, more coat, more enthusiasm. This guide is organized by category so you can build a kit over time instead of all at once.
Harnesses
Look for a fit that clears the shoulder, adjusts in at least four places, and does not sit into the coat in a way that mats the ruff.
Leashes
- A six-foot everyday leash
- A long line for recall work
- A hands-free option for running or hiking
Collars
Flat collars for ID; a rolled or narrow profile reduces the flat spot a wide collar can wear into a thick ruff.
Crates
Enough room to stand, turn and stretch out. Dividers help puppies grow into full-size crates.
Beds
Washable covers are the deciding feature. Aussie beds get hair, mud and water, in that order.
Grooming tools
- Undercoat rake
- Slicker brush
- Metal comb
- Nail grinder
- Absorbent drying towels
Enrichment products
- Refillable rubber toys
- Puzzle boards
- Snuffle mats
- Durable tug toys
Travel accessories
- Vehicle restraint or travel crate
- Collapsible bowls
- Portable water
- Seat and cargo covers
Cleaning equipment
A vacuum rated for pet hair, an enzymatic cleaner and a rubber hair-lifting tool cover most of what a shedding household needs.
Outdoor equipment
- Secure fencing or a long-line setup
- Shade and water for yard time
- Boot trays and towel stations at the door
