How Often Should You Brush an Australian Shepherd?

A workable baseline

Two to three thorough sessions per week keeps most adult Aussie coats ahead of matting. Thorough means line-brushing to the skin in sections, not a two-minute pass down the back.

During coat blow

When the undercoat releases in sheets — usually twice a year, though many Aussies shed steadily year-round — daily ten-minute sessions do more than one long weekend groom. The coat comes out faster than a weekly schedule can keep up with, and loose undercoat left in place is what becomes matting.

Puppies

Brush an Aussie puppy far more often than the coat needs it. Daily two-minute handling sessions build the tolerance you will rely on when the adult coat arrives at around a year old.

Active and outdoor dogs

• Check and comb feathering after hikes, tall grass or swimming.
• Dry the undercoat after water — damp coat at the skin mats fast.
• Burrs and seeds are easier to remove the same day.

The high-risk areas

Even on a good schedule, mats form first behind the ears, in the armpits, on the pants and around the base of the tail. A quick comb check of those five spots takes a minute and catches most problems early.

If brushing has been skipped

• Work in short sessions rather than one long one — patience runs out before the coat does.
• Start with a comb to find mats, then work them from the outer edge inward.
• Never bathe a matted coat; water tightens mats.
• Book a groomer if mats are close to the skin or the dog resents handling.
